Chronically Homeless

I’m up in Asheville, NC for a Thanksgiving vacation with family.  We went into the downtown area to get a bite to eat.  Afterwards we walked around and found a playground for my son Cameron to burn some energy on.  All around the playground of rocks were homeless individuals sitting on benches with their belongings in bags.  As I was taking a picture of Greg, my husband and Cameron, Henry came up to me and asked me if he could take a picture of us.  We got to talking.

Henry is about to turn 50 and has been homeless for 22 years.  He was raised in NC by his grandparents.  According to Henry, his Mom did not really want him and he has not met his Dad. His grandfather died of a heart attack and his grandmother died of old age. Once they passed, he had nowhere to go and became depressed and homeless. He is a very nice man with a twinkle in his eye.  He asked if Greg was my husband, and then asked to talk with him.  They had a great conversation!

He told Greg all about the aliens and UFO’s that are using the lights in the stores to make humans look older and how he met a woman he thought was in her 70’s and she told him she was in her 40’s.  He believes the lights in the stores are affecting our skin and hair.  He read all this in the newspaper.

I asked him his name and introduced myself.  We gave a fist bump to each other and I had to leave.

We were not far from the Haywood Street Congregation that created the documentary Theirs is the Kingdom and where we will be attending church in the morning, and that houses the fresco painting from the documentary. We drove by and saw homeless camps nearby.  It warmed my heart to be near a place that sees God within the homeless population and welcomes them to church!  I am so looking forward to attending in the morning!
