As land was being divided up by the tribes, God instructed Moses to make sure land from each tribe was set aside for the Levites, in proportion to their inheritance. Farm land for their animals was also to be given, around their cities. Six cities of refuge were also to be given, where individuals who committed a crime that ended another’s life would live.
If the murder was deliberate, the murderer was to be killed. If the murder was not intentional, the murderer was to live in the city of refuge until the high priest died. If they went outside the border of the city of refuge, they could be killed, and the murderer would not be charged.”
35:4 “Do not make the land unclean where you live and where I dwell; for I, the Lord, reside among the Israelites.
