Raising up a Widow’s Son

7: 11-17  Soon after healing the officer’s slave, Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, followed by a large crowd.  A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the gate to the village.  The only son of a widow had died and a large crowd was coming out as he approached.  When Jesus saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion.  “Don’t cry,” he said.  He walked over to the coffin, touched it and the bearers stopped.  “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”  The dead boy sat up and began to talk.  Great fear swept over the crowd and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”  This news got around and spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.

Jesus traveled to different cities and regions spreading the word of God and healing individuals, physically and internally from within their hearts.  He felt great compassion for those he encountered who were suffering, or whose hearts were broken.  He did things through his compassion and healings that went against the religious law at that time.  At that time, the coffins at Jewish funerals were open.  According the Jewish law, anyone who touched a corpse became ceremonially unclean.  That did not keep Jesus from touching the corpse and reuniting the young man with his mother as he was her financial support.

This is pure, unconditional love.  Love that is given without judgement.  Love that is given without expectations or restrictions.  There was no “I’ll heal you, but . . . ,” or “If I give you $x.xx, you can or can’t spend it on ‘x’.”  Jesus could see what was in their hearts, which did not always match their current circumstances.
